A very critical scene in LOTF is when Piggy bites the dust.
This scene on page 181 is a critical scene because of what it represents. It
represents that the savages are more insane than ever, but it symbolizes the
death of civilization on the island. Since that is what Piggy represented; him
dying is the death of civilization. Another symbol that is destroyed is the conch
which represents the same thing as piggy.
On page 181, Ralph states that he is chief of the island’s
civilization, which is now gone. This is important to the whole book because
the idea of civilization lingered throughout everybody until this point. This
is what kept the savages as civil as they had been. Once civilization is
destroyed the savages have free rein over the island and they can do whatever
they want. Never the less, this is also important because a favorite character
died.
